Food as Medicine Update
The Food as Medicine (FAM) Wellness Circle is Food For All’s innovative program that helps vulnerable Washington, DC residents improve their health through nutritious food, personalized support, social connection, and mindfulness practices. One year into the pilot,
participants are already reporting meaningful improvements in their physical, emotional, and social wellbeing. See below for key highlights.
Impact on Dietary Change
For many participants, healthier eating begins with small, manageable steps: adding an extra serving of vegetables, reducing sugary snacks, cooking more meals at home, or paying closer
attention to portion sizes. Over time, these changes add up. Participants report greater awareness of how food affects their health and increased confidence in their ability to make choices that support their wellbeing.

Improvement in Health Indicators

The benefits of healthy eating extend beyond the dinner table. Clients feel more in control of their health and describe improvements in key indicators such as blood sugar, blood pressure, cholesterol, and weight. These positive changes motivate clients to further improve their overall wellness.
Increased Social Engagement
Social connection is an important part of good health and wellbeing. Through the FAM program, participants are encouraged to engage with their communities in meaningful ways.
Some volunteer with Food For All through client outreach calls and gardening activities, while others participate in faithbased fellowships or connect with others online. These opportunities help reduce isolation, foster a sense of purpose, and strengthen community ties.

Every month, we share a wellness tip from a member of the FFA community. This month, we hear from Kitty, who has been a participant of the FAM program since August 2025:
“Trade the hope of a quick fix for the certainty of a 1% shift. It is the smallest, quietest habits on your plate that compound into the deepest healing.”
