History

Food for All DC was established in 1984 in Washington DC in affiliation with Ananda Marga Universal Relief Team (AMURT). FFA started as a small operation providing cooked food for unhoused people across DC. In 1990, FFA transitioned to a grocery delivery program for anyone facing food insecurity.

Since FFA is specialized in home delivery, demand for our services exploded during the Covid-19 pandemic. Now, every week we provide 12,000 pounds of food to 200 households and 12 partner organizations, helping more than 1,500 people.

FFA has become a helpful referral agency for DC-based social workers from health providers, DC Public Schools, and community organizations.

Mission

Food For All’s mission is to provide food assistance to people who are food insecure, offer meaningful civic engagement for volunteers, and build bonds of solidarity with like-minded organizations in the Washington, D.C. region.

AMURT (Ananda Marga Universal Relief Team) is one of the few international humanitarian non-governmental organisations with roots in India. AMURT India was formed in 1965 to help meet the needs of populations affected by disasters that regularly hit the Indian subcontinent. Over the years, AMURT has established independent chapters worldwide, including AMURT USA, to create a network that can meet disaster and development needs almost anywhere.

In 1985, AMURT USA, broadened its goals to include long-term development. AMURT USA feels that it can play a useful role in helping vulnerable communities break the cycle of poverty and gain greater control over their lives. For us, development is human exchange: people sharing wisdom, knowledge and experience to build a better world.
