Food for Health

For the past four years, FFA has supported over 400 clients with specialized diets, including heart-friendly, gluten-free, and diabetes-conscious options. We believe in the power of food to transform lives, a philosophy echoed by the ‘food is medicine’ movement, which highlights nutrition as a key to disease prevention and management. As more clients see the link between health and lifestyle, they choose healthier foods.

The impact has been profound. Our clients have reported encouraging outcomes such as weight loss and better sleep (due to reduced anxiety about food insecurity). Lab results are also improving, with one client proudly reporting lower blood sugar levels, thanks partly to a healthier diet.

FFA is helping clients integrate a broader range of wellness practices into their daily lives—including exercise, meditation, gardening, and social connection. By embracing this holistic approach, we aim to foster lasting mind-body wellness. This newsletter highlights two FFA clients who have taken inspiring steps toward meaningful lifestyle changes.

George: Clean Living

In 2021, Georges suffered an eye stroke, causing irreversible optic nerve damage and near-total
blindness. His life took a downward turn, leading to hospitalization and eventually a homeless
shelter, where he had little control over his diet. Relying on junk food, his physical and mental
health deteriorated. In early 2024, Georges’ case worker secured permanent housing and introduced him to FFA. We promptly delivered nutritious food tailored to his health needs.

Now, Georges feels empowered. With better control over his diet, he manages high blood
pressure and cholesterol, staying in close contact with FFA to ensure his groceries support his
condition. FFA provides vegetables, berries, dairy alternatives, white meat, nuts, and oatmeal—
keeping him on track. A lifelong health advocate, Georges avoids smoking and alcohol and champions prevention over cure. Despite worsening vision, he maintains daily walks and home exercises, advising others to “think positively, live clean, and care for your body.”

Patrick: Body as a temple

As a young adult, Patrick believed he was invincible, indulging in whatever food and drink he desired. But life had other plans. A doctor’s diagnosis of obesity, hypertension, and diabetes forced him to change his habits. This wake-up call struck even harder as he witnessed loved ones lose their battles with those very diseases.

Determined to rewrite his own story, Patrick embraced his doctor’s advice, transforming his diet and taste preferences. He ate more fresh produce and lean meats. He baked more and fried less. He substituted water for alcohol. He watched his proportions.

In August 2023, Patrick found an ally in FFA, whose dedication to his dietary needs – like providing lactose-free options and healthy groceries – allows him to keep supporting his health through food.

Patrick now sees his body as a temple, recognizing the importance of proper care. “If something’s wrong with my body, I don’t wait until tomorrow,” he says, committed to maintaining a healthy, fulfilling life.
