Food for All DC was established in 1984 in Washington DC by Peter Sage in affiliation with the Ananda Marga Universal Relief Team (AMURT). We started as a small operation aimed at providing home grocery delivery for those not mobile enough to make it to other local organizations for assistance and have maintained our grassroots mentality. Food for All DC is still completely volunteer run serving over 200 households across all four quadrants of Washington DC. We make over 3000 deliveries a year.
Mission
Food for All is a non-profit organization that strives to provide emergency food to those who are in temporary situations of need. Our clients are generally elderly citizens, handicapped, or single mothers with young children. Each week we accept referrals from social workers who have been contacted by individuals, and in some cases, we receive calls directly from individuals in need. The majority of the food is obtained from the Capital Area Food Bank although we also receive donations from area supermarkets, local farms and other organizations such as Food Rescue US. The operation is entirely volunteer operated with the assistance of public and private funding.
Parent Organization
AMURT (Ananda Marga Universal Relief Team) is one of the few private voluntary organizations of Third World origin, being founded in India in 1965. Its original objective was to help meet the needs of victims of disasters that regularly hit the Indian sub-continent. Over the years AMURT has established teams in twenty five countries, to create a network that can meet development and disaster needs almost anywhere in the world. In 1985 AMURT broadened their goals to include long-term development. AMURT feels people can play a useful role in helping the poor break the cycle of poverty and gain greater control over their lives. Development is human exchange: people sharing wisdom, knowledge and experience to build a better world.
